“Why do sprays stop working?”

Nasal polyps are benign growths that lead to chronic congestion, loss of smell, and recurrent sinus infections. While steroids and sprays can shrink small polyps, they rarely cure complex or extensive disease.

If you have been managing polyps for years with little lasting relief, well planned surgery combined with a strategic management plan is usually the answer.

The Limitations of Medication Alone

For many patients, nasal polyps act like “weeds” in a garden.

  • The Spray Barrier: When polyps become large or extensive, nasal sprays cannot physically reach the sinus cavities where the inflammation originates.
  • The Cycle: You take prednisone or steroids → the polyps shrink → the meds stop → the polyps grow back larger.
  • The Anatomy: Severe polyps can physically erode bone or stretch the nasal structure, which medication cannot fix.

Surgery is often required to physically remove the bulk of the disease so that medications can actually work post-operatively.

The Yeung Institute Approach

Dr. Yeung specializes in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) for complex polyposis. We do not just “snip” the polyps; we restore the sinus architecture. Our Protocol:

  • Complete Removal: We use high-definition endoscopes to meticulously remove polyps from the deep recesses of the sinuses (ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses) that are often missed in standard procedures.
  • Widening the Pathways: We enlarge the natural drainage openings of ALL sinuses. This prevents mucus from getting trapped, which is the primary fuel for future polyp growth.
  • Preservation of Structure: Even with extensive disease, we preserve the normal mucosa and turbinate structures to maintain the natural humidification of your nose.

What About Biologics?

We stay at the forefront of treatment. In cases where surgery alone isn’t enough, or polyps are extremely aggressive, we work closely with you to manage post-surgical care, which may include advanced therapies like Biologics (Dupilumab, etc.) to control the inflammation at a systemic level.

We are not just surgeons; we are partners in your long-term breathing health.

Symptoms of Complex Nasal Polyps

You may be a candidate for surgical intervention if:

  • You have lost your sense of smell (anosmia) or taste.
  • You feel constant pressure or fullness in your face/forehead.
  • You mouth-breathe at night due to complete nasal blockage.
  • You have had multiple courses of oral steroids with only temporary relief.
  • Previous sinus surgery did not fully resolve your congestion.

Recovery and Prevention

The goal of surgery is to get you to a “baseline” where you can breathe again.

  • The Procedure: Outpatient, minimally invasive. No external incisions.
  • Healing: We use post-operative rinses and steroids to keep the healing lining clean.
  • Maintenance: Most patients require a maintenance routine (sprays/rinses) to keep new polyps from forming, but the surgery creates the physical space for those treatments to finally work.

Patient Testimonial

“I couldn’t taste my food for 5 years. I thought it was just part of getting older. Dr. Yeung removed the massive polyps and opened up my sinuses. Two weeks later, I smelled coffee brewing for the first time in ages. It was emotional.” — J.R., Sugar Land
