Nasal Polyps Q & A

What are nasal polyps?

Nasal polyps are benign, soft, tear-shaped growths that arise from the linings of your nasal passages or sinuses. Most of the time, nasal polyps don’t cause symptoms and don’t need to be treated or removed.

Large or multiple nasal polyps may block your sinus openings and prevent proper mucus drainage. Polyps can also contribute to sleep apnea and sinus infections or aggravate asthma. Dr. Yeung removes troublesome nasal polyps with a polypectomy.

Why do I have nasal polyps?

Researchers don’t know for sure what causes nasal polyps, but they’re probably an immune-system response to chronic inflammation.

You’re more likely to have nasal polyps if you:

  • Have asthma
  • Are sensitive to aspirin
  • Are prone to chronic infections or allergies
  • Have cystic fibrosis or Churg-Strauss syndrome
  • Are sensitive to certain medications

What are the symptoms of nasal polyps?

Most nasal polyps are asymptomatic. However, polyps can sometimes cause breathing problems and reduce your sense of smell or taste. They may also exacerbate snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, and other conditions.

Untreated nasal polyps may cause or contribute to chronic sinusitis. Polyps that grow large enough to expand your nasal bones may even alter the exterior shape of your nose.

How do ENT surgeons remove nasal polyps?

Dr. Yeung recommends the most conservative treatment for polyps first. He may recommend corticosteroids or other medications, such as antibiotics, for chronic bacterial sinusitis. He can also open your sinus passages with minimally invasive balloon sinuplasty.

In the case of larger, more troublesome, or unresponsive polyps, Dr. Yeung removes them with a new, minimally invasive surgery called functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Dr. Yeung is a leader in FESS surgical techniques, which provide more precision, fewer complications, and a shorter recovery time.

What are the benefits of a polypectomy with FESS?

Removing your polyps can improve your breathing and sleeping. You may also recover your senses of smell and taste and have fewer bouts of sinusitis and allergy attacks.
