What is a CT scan of the sinuses?

A CT scan of the face produces images that show a patient’s nasal and sinus cavities. The sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces located within the bones of the face that surround the nasal cavity, a system of air channels connecting the nose with the back of the throat. A CT scan enables an ENT physician to view your four pairs of sinuses and the nasal passages they connect to with great detail, which is important for the accurate evaluation and diagnosis of conditions such as chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps or a cerebrospinal fluid leak.

Unlike X-rays, a CT scanner shows not only bones, but also soft tissues and blood vessels. Additionally, a CT scan produces multiple cross-sectional images that can be examined in several views. When combined, these images can generate three-dimensional models to provide an accurate depiction of what’s going on within your sinuses.

Houston Sinus Surgery at the Yeung Institute is pleased to offer a cutting-edge CT scanner for the sinuses on-site, so our patients can undergo a sinus scan from the comfort and convenience of our office. This technology enables Dr. Cecil Yeung to determine the root cause of a sinus or nasal problem and make an accurate diagnosis – all within minutes.

What is a sinus CT scan used to show?

  • Evaluate sinuses that are filled with thickened sinus membranes or fluid
  • Help diagnose sinusitis
  • Determine whether sinus headaches are being caused by a sinus problem
  • Help plan for sinus surgery by providing a precise definition of a patient’s sinus and nasal anatomy and supplying accurate information about any tumors within the nasal cavity and sinuses

A sinus CT scan has a number of benefits, which include:

  • Performed in-office
  • Produces accurate results with quick turnaround in order to make a diagnosis
  • Performed with low-dose CT scanning (minimal radiation exposure)
  • Minimizes unnecessary additional testing and invasive procedures
