What to Expect at your Appointment

Appointment

During your first visit to the Yeung Institute, Dr. Cecil Yeung will collect your medical history, perform a sinus exam and assess your sinus issue(s). Based on your history and the severity of symptoms, Dr. Yeung can then decide the best option for you: medication or further examination. Usually prescribing medication is the first step. You will receive a prescription, and after the medicine has been allotted sufficient time to work, you will return to the office for a follow-up visit. The next step will depend on how the medication has affected your sinuses.

In some instances, further examination is necessary before medication is prescribed. This is common if structural issues are suspected. In these cases you will be scheduled for a CT scan. Once your CT has been reviewed, Dr. Yeung can determine the course of action that would be the most beneficial: continued medication or surgery. If surgery is recommended, a staff member will answer any questions you may have, schedule a surgery date and provide you with all the necessary information and medication.

What to Expect After Surgery

For your comfort and well-being, continue taking all medications prescribed and change your dressing regularly. In order to ensure that the effects of the anesthesia have worn off completely, it is recommended that you refrain from normal activities such as work/school for 2-3 days after surgery. After surgery, packing will be placed in your nasal cavity. The type of packing you receive and your post-operative follow ups will depend on the procedure(s) you undergo.

Patients Who Have a Septoplasty:

Patients who have a Septoplasty will have upper AND lower packing. Two to four days after surgery you will have your first post-operative appointment. At this time, a nurse will remove the lower packing, significantly reducing any discomfort you may feel. Once the lower packing is removed, you will be able to breathe freely and you can return to most of your normal activities, such as work/school. 2-3 days after surgery, you will return for your second post-op appointment. At this time the upper packing will be removed and Dr. Yeung will examine your sinuses with a scope. You will continue your post-op regiment and return to our office regularly for follow-up appointments.

Patients Who Have Not Had a Septoplasty:

Patients who have not had a Septoplasty will have upper packing only. Your first post-op appointment will occur about 5-6 days after surgery. At this time the upper packing will be removed and Dr. Yeung will examine your sinuses with a scope. You will continue your post-op regiment and will return to the office regularly for follow up appointments.

Please Note: The post operative regiment is pivotal to the healing process; each step is necessary if maximum results are desired.

Though you will start feeling well days after surgery, complete healing takes about 2 months. During this time please continue your post-op regiment and refrain from exercise (for 2-3 weeks) and aspirin (for 2 months). The healing process is different for each person. At each follow up appointment, Dr. Yeung will assess your progress and alter your treatment as needed. For your well-being, please do not discontinue any medication or procedure until Dr. Yeung advises you to do so.
